2023 Eisteddfod Choir Launched

13 January 2023

As we enter the year of the Llŷn and Eifionydd National Eisteddfod, organisers have announced details of this year's festival choir projects.

People from all over Llŷn, Eifionydd and Arfon are invited to join two exciting projects, interweaving with the festival’s artistic programme, which will be announced over the coming months.

The Pulse - Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow is the title of the festival choir project, bringing Tŷ Gwerin into the Pavilion with the choir performing with the hugely popular group, Pedair, namely Gwenan Gibbard, Gwyneth Glyn, Meinir Gwilym and Siân James, along with other guests.

The rehearsals will be led by Gwenan Gibbard, Siân Wheway and others, and will meet every other Sunday night, visiting Caernarfon and Pwllheli alternately, to ensure that the project is accessible to singers from all over the catchment area . Rehearsals will begin on Sunday 29 January.

As well as offering an opportunity to sing along to some of the nation's favorite hymns, the Cymanfa Choir also celebrates the achievements of the world famous opera singer, Leila Megane, an important part of the music history of the Eisteddfod. Originally from Bethesda, she lived in the Pwllheli area for many years, and was the first to perform 'Unwaith eto 'Dear Wales' on the festival stage, which is sung to welcome the President of Wales and the World to the Pavilion stage during the annual Cymanfa Ganu.

Eisteddfod Artistic Director, Elen Elis, said, "We’re proud to announce the details of this year's Eisteddfod choir, and look forward to welcoming a large number of singers from all over the catchment area to join us in two extremely exciting projects. Sharing a stage with the group Pedair will certainly appeal to many people, and we’re sure that the choir and audience will enjoy the experience as we bring Tŷ Gwerin to the Pavilion stage for the first time.

"We’re also looking forward to celebrating the life and contribution of Leila Megane as part of the Cymanfa Choir project. We’re very proud of the important connection between the Eisteddfod and the world famous singer and bringing this to the stage will be a chance for a new generation to learn about her contribution to music in Wales."
