Appeal for Knitters and Crocheters to join Eisteddfod Project

16 November 2022

Come and help!

Can you knit or crochet?  If so, the National Eisteddfod is inviting you to join a brand-new project in preparation for next year's festival in Llŷn and Eifionydd.

Words in Wool celebrates some of the beautiful names that make up our heritage here in Gwynedd.  Starting locally and looking out across the area, festival organisers want to record the names of ports, crab holes, quarries, ‘ponciau’ (slate galleries), rivers, fields, farms, and much more.  They also hope to rediscover a few names forgotten over the years.

It's a chance for people of all ages either to come together or work independently – whatever works them – to create 8"x8" squares, either knitted or crocheted, in any stitch, in dk or chunky wool.  The aim is to create packages of 64 squares to create backdrops / murals in our communities across the local area, with schools leading the work.

Schools will also choose which words and names they want to display and will then invite the local community to join them to stitch or iron the names on the woolen squares provided in the Words in Wool kits, to be displayed at the local school or in the community.

Want to get involved?  Join us today by ringing your local contact to find out more.  Can’t knit but want to help?  Why not offer some wool to help us create enough squares for local schools?  And if you live in another part of Wales - or beyond - email gwyb@eisteddfod.wales for more information.
